Today’s Watching Wednesday is keeping with up with the hype that is Fire Emblem Heroes and the 1st year anniversary of Fire Emblem:Fates, with the first time the world outside Japan was first introduced to the series with the 1997 OVA.

Based on the third title of the series, Mystery of the Emblem, in turn influenced the remake of the first title.

Prince Marth (Named Mars due to bad translations), heir to the throne of Aritia, has fled his homeland and the invaders bent on conquering the entire continent. Together with the Aritian Knights he hides and bides his time in the friendly island kingdom of Talus. Though criticized for constantly daydreaming or being in a bad mood, he has found a friend in Caeda, the princess of Talus. Together they indulge in hayrides and shopping trips, or just standing upon the parapet and looking out over the land. However, despite how pleasant life is, he cannot forget the circumstances that separated him from his land and forced his beloved sister to sacrifice herself for him.

Of course with some liberties taken from the game and some to fit the animation a little better, this was honestly one of my favorite old school OVA’s of the time, and was what got me into the series as a whole.

If you enjoy that campy feel that only 90’s anime can give you, plus want to see how we viewed Marth, definitely give this one a try!
